A bit from 1939…
And since it’s the 1930’s, the time of the Great Depression, there was the issue it being hard to find even a dime. This dime is just a bit more recent, but you get the idea. First, the obverse, which explains instantly why they are known as “Mercury dimes.” This, though, is actually incorrect. She is Liberty, but the headgear causes confusion.
And now the reverse… and well, with that symbol and events of December 1941 and on, it’s not hard to work out why the design might have been changed. But that was not the main reason for the change (in 1945). Putting FDR’s image on the coin was the main drive for change.
Nice finds, and nice bit of history!
