If you read the addendum to There Will Be A Slight(ly Infinite) Delay you might have wondered if the party of (un)interest showed up on Thursday. Amazingly, that Thursday he did. He was there, did fairly decent work, and claimed that everything was due to someone’s claim he had something on him, which he did not.
As he didn’t have the twitchiness of meth and actually showed up, I could believe he was clean of that. The rest didn’t really add up. If nothing was on him or his stuff, why hold him for several days with the charges as indicated? And then there was the matter that after that night he once again was as reliable as he had been earlier, which is to say “not at all” as he simply stopped showing up – again.
The fellow is listed on the schedule for this week, but interestingly whoever typed up the dailies (daily schedule summary for quick reference) left him off. Just as well, so far he’s not appeared since last week – which made Saturday night Far Too Interesting. I was on a bit of holiday over the weekend so I did not find out until Sunday night. I was scheduled off Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday nights. Things were so backed up I wound up punching in for a few hours Sunday night (my holiday, dagnabbit!) to relieve at least some of the pressure.
Next week’s schedule is very sparse, but at least this joker isn’t on it. It might be the first honest schedule in several weeks – one which everyone listed on it is likely to show up. We were hoping last week’s schedule was finally honest, too, so… not placing any bets.
Not about my posting here. That delay is finite, though variable. The title is about a now former coworker. Or alleged coworker. The co- part was true: we were on the same shift, supposedly doing similar things. The worker part I am less sure of. He never really seemed quite all there. There were some rumors of a drug-addled past that might well have burned out some brain circuitry.
A few nights ago he didn’t show up – again. He was called, and a return call came back from someone else (never a good sign) saying he’d been sick all day and he could not be woken up. Uh huh. Note that I am a male minotaur. That claim is… that which I flush. The next night there was another call, asking if he had made it into work. This was most interesting as he was not scheduled that night. Hrrrrmmmm.. “I gotta go to work..” and go out to… do something that isn’t that. That bodes. As Pratchett noted in Discworld, nothing ever bodes well.
And so last night the word was there had been another call, again not from him, but informing us that he was “…in jail for a few days. He’ll call when he gets out.” Uh huh. Riiiight. Does the line “Don’t call us. We’ll call you.” come to mind? It should. And of course we won’t call. What for? And once home, I informed $HOUSEMATE of all this. A very little digging, using some details I’ve been careful to omit, revealed that this genius had not simply gotten rowdy or such. Nope. He was found to have a non-trivial amount of a controlled substance (no listing of what, but meth is the way to bet). Enough that “dealer” charges seem likely to stick. Not a very smart dealer, obviously. I am guessing that “a few days” is a very lowball estimate – or should be. But even if he’s out right now… Do Not Want.
He followed a familiar pattern: Looks a bit off (hardly unusual, really) seems at least semi-there for a week or two, but making some odd mistakes, and then gets very sporadic at best after first payday. Let me translate for the fortunate who deal with clean competent people: Druggie straightens up enough to get a job, does the job after a fashion but some neural circuitry is toast and it shows. And then with a bit of money, more drugs can be afforded and things go to hell – again.
ADDENDUM: So help me, I was told that this character might be back next Thursday. I really hope not.
