Some weeks ago, I bought some epsom salts and figured I’d have a nice, relaxing and hopefully (minor) ache-easing bath. All was well the first time. The second time? Evidently not all the salts fully dissolved and a few crystals settled on my lower leg, and I didn’t notice soon enough. Sure enough, managed to get a rash or chemical burn from that.
It started as a few yellowish spots (something like a nitric acid stain, but not as BRIGHT YELLOW), and in a few hours became a decidedly angry red. A robe brushing that area was… decidedly less than pleasant. An antibiotic ointment and bandage was applied (and re-applied and re-applied, and…)
The rash/burn healed or mostly, and associated pain is long gone. There is, however, an outline of where bandaging was, and itchiness. An anti-itch cream helps, but I really would like to not need it any more.
I just looked up the MSDS for plain epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) and there’s this:
“Skin contact: No known adverse effects.”
Oh yeah? Alright, did I have a reaction to the magnesium sulfate crystals? Eucalyptus? Spearmint? I’ve had NO issues with spearmint before, nor eucalyptus. No issues anywhere else, just the area where I (eventually) noticed the grains/crystals. Granted, I’ve not used spearmint (oil) topically, so it IS possible. I have used eucalyptus thus without issue, but I don’t know how dilute it is/was.
Yes, I can try to take a “relaxing bath” and wind up with an injury from it. Reality is WEIRD at me, in case you hadn’t noticed.
