The nice long-lasting spring wind-up clock for the basement has been something of a problem. It’s not taking up much-needed space or such. But the timekeeping adjustment is the pendulum weight… which is at about the very lowest place it can be. And yet the clock gains time. I’ve been careful to NOT make further adjustments to the weight/pendulum and just measuring the daily gain. The first day I might have screwed up, as it was something like 23 or 24 minutes of gain. And the next was 15. As was the next. And the next. I plan to keep logging this until at least April 1 (no foolin’!) to be sure the error is at least consistent. Only then will I risk any adjustment – and keep it fairly small, log it, and then spend another week or so logging the offset from proper timekeeping.
One concern is that the clock is hung on the wall above my desk/workbench. A desk that currently has a couple lanterns on it as there’s really no place else for them to be unless and until some serious cleaning & organizing happens (“Gentleman, place your bets…”). Yesterday as I was taking readings and stopping & re-starting the clock, there was a crash. Oh no, not another broken chimney! Or, a broken font and a kerosene mess! Fortunately it was neither. It was candle that was due for disposal anyway.
The candle was in a sort of chalice, that had been painted and in steampunk-but-not-really someone had decided to “just glue some gears on it.” But the candle was more meant to be decor than anything truly practical, and I went and actually tried to use it as a candle beyond mood lighting. It was spent, or close enough. So, while an annoyance to clean up, not a disaster. Just an annoyance.
