It is indeed Mother’s Day today, and in my mother’s case it really is – twice over. Once upon a time, my mother became a mother on this day and month. Five years later (plus or minus 45 minutes – yes, we checked) it happened again and thus I have a younger sister. We have NO excuse for forgetting each other’s birthday anniversaries.
I think I’ve figured out the sad reality behind Democrats Ilhan Omar and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The Democrats drank their own Narrative.
The Democrat Narrative is that Trump et. al. are racist, hateful, and stupid. So they go full-goose-bozo with hate and stupidity.
Omar’s antisemitism covers the hate, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez covers the stupidity. THIS is the Democrat election strategy.
This would be such great material for a modern-day Laugh In or a truly independent Saturday Night Live. As things stand? It reminds me of the Rodney Dangerfield joke about a visit with his doctor…
Rodney: OK, Doc, how do I stand?
Doc: That’s what puzzles me.
Here is a number:
If you say it, or ‘hear’ it as you read it, how did you say or hear it? There are various ways. Recalling NASA footage of Apollo missions where such numbers were mentioned, it was clear that being SURE was critical (can’t have a mission go wrong for a misplaced decimal… especially if it’s a manned mission and the world is watching!) so for them, the number would be “Thirty-Seven DECIMAL Three” or “Three Seven DECIMAL Three.”
In one old short, seen in one of the At the Bijou ‘episodes’ (for lack of a better term) a fellow would pronounce it in an exaggerated fashion, “Thirty-seven PERI-ODD three.” Though most people would simply say “Thirty-seven point three.” Or, if it’s a known case of something, even “Thirty-seven, three” with the decimal point implied. And then there is my family, or at least Pa, who would on non-serious occassion pronounce it “Thirty-seven Boint three.”
Of course, it is technically a ‘decimal point’ and not a period, decimal, or boint. Maybe a point. And if the number were other than base 10, it would be some other thing, such as, perhaps, an ‘octal point’. I suspect precious few, if any, would then say “Three Seven OCTAL Three.”
[ADDENDUM: $HOUSEMATE mentions that there is reference to the “radix point” for various numeric bases. Technically it fits for base 10, but ‘decimal point’ is far more common.]
But family did grow, officially, a bit this past Saturday when my sister went and got married. The fellow she married has a kid who is, I think, pretty much on his own or will be in not very long. Not sure of the official relative designation and I don’t really care.
So if I seemed a bit more scarce or less given to extended comments this past weekend, I was seriously distracted due to travel, preparation, visiting, the actual ceremony, the gathering after, and more travel back home. It was a nice relatively small event held in a friend’s back yard. Evidently sister & fiance had considered just doing the Justice of the Peace thing and taking care of it, but as she put it, “It turns out we’re bad at eloping.”
Just as well. It was something of a family reunion but without the pointlessness of such a thing. And if I didn’t know everyone there, it was close enough. That was likely as it was kept fairly small and not some “every vaguely related person we can possibly think of” but “family out to first cousins(& their kids) and a few friends.”
The weather cooperated and the ceremony was held outdoors. Really, things were about as ideal as they could be in late May. And now back to what passes for normal.
